Shattered Empire: In the Shadows of the Dragon Mountains
The Scorpion Clan
Unknown to Bayushi Aramoro
The Scorpion Clan was founded by the Kami Bayushi. The clan and its members are widely considered to be villainous and untrustworthy by the rest of Rokugan, though they merely attempt to fulfill the duty given to their family by the First Emperor on the day of his ascension.
The Scorpion Clan fell, three years before the events known as the Clan Wars, in what is known as the Scorpion Clan Coup. As protectors of the Emperor, and one of his closets allies, everyone was shocked when the Scorpion Clan struck down the Emperor Hantei the 38th, and then tried to claim his throne. Their Champion Shoju ruled for less then a week, and it ended with his death. Akodo Toturi then tried to claim the throne to end the chaos and unite the Clans, but when Hantei the 39th appeared and unharmed Totrui and his Akodo were disbanded to become ronin.
The Scorpion too were cast out, disbanded and to be purged form the Empire. However, the Empire appears to have missed more then half of the Scorpion in their purge. The Scorpion, hungry for revenge and led by the Empress Bayushi Kachiko, former wife of Shoju and current wife of the Emperor, laid the ground work for the Clan Wars. Their actions fed the fires that led to near and total collapse of the Empire and the rise of Fu Leng, although no one can prove that exactly.
At the tail end of the war, the Scorpion realize what they have done, and redeem themselves by undoing virtually all that they wrought, aiding allies and foes alike to focus them upon ending the rise of Fu Leng. When the armies assemble on the Second Day of Thunder, the Scorpion Clan comes out of the shadows, and leave their hidden identities behind as they appear in full regalia. The Empress even gives her life in the end as the Scorpion Thunder.
Now that the wars are over, the Scorpion are still disbanded, and everyone knows they were not destroyed. So they lurk in the shadows once more. No one knows what their plans are, if they are rebuilding, or where… but they know they are out there.
There is a single Scorpion left in the open. Bayushi Goshiu, who remained in the imperial courts. Apparently when the Clan was disbanded, he had so much power (blackmail some whispered) that the Emperor spared him from the disbanding. During the rise of Fu Leng he saved the imperial court from imprisonment and led them all to safety. He is seen as a war hero and remains in the Imperial Capital, aiding the city with its recovery. Some speculate if he leads the Clan, but no one is sure.
- By 1133 the Scorpion currently hide behind a mask of the Unicorn Clan and the Mantis Clan. It is whispered in the lower societies that the Scorpion deal with issues covertly for those Clans. The scant few public faces of the Scorpion remain in key positions to better assert what political prowess they have. Their territory is not theirs in name but it is assumed that they rule from the shadows.
- By 1145 the Scorpion are perhaps the most visible they have been in decades. Their numbers rally around the visible scorpion, and although the youngest amunst them has died in the Wasps’s Betrayal, Goshui’s line has continued with a marriage into the Jitsuna family and a young future heir is on the way.
However, little is know of the unseen rest of the Clan and the forces that pull at it’s threads.
